How the Zeitgeist rules ALL things fashion.

If you, like lots of people make the mistake of thinking trends come only from the runway - and that there is nothing else to it… then let me break it too you sweetly:

Honey… your wrong.

The truth is - trends are predicted by buyers & forecaster who then report back to their designers with colours, textures, prints, shapes (basically the whole shebang) on what is going to be in Vogue a few seasons down the line.

How do they predict this? Well - most of them refer to what we call ‘The Zeitgeist’. This is a theory made up by Nystrom, its basically is a way of putting together everything that has happened in a certain space of time. All the significant, dominant & accidental events + art vogues (i.e. anything from the art industry) along with anything else that may have had an impact on the public.

Below are a couple of diagrams I have made to try and show you what ‘The Zeitgeist’ is:

So here we have The Zeitgeist for 2011.

(This is mainly focused on the UK by the way…)

image

In the diagram above we have the following:

- The wedding of Prince William & Kate Middleton.

-Andy Warhol being exhibited for the first time in 60 years across the UK.

-The recession - yes unfortunatley it is still around… and apparently its only going to get worse! (this makes me sad as it means less shopping trips on my radar!)

-The London Riots… a very nasty week in the UK, where hundreds of yobs took it upon themselves to start demolishing the streets of London.

-The deaths of icons: Amy Winehouse, Elizabeth Taylor & Jeff Conaway.

-The deaths of Gaddafi & Osama Bin’ Laden - Yippee.

-The Tsunami that hit Japan in March, killing over 15,000 people.

-War continues in Libya & Iraq.

-Nations prepare for the 2012 Olympics in London.

-More & more countries in favour of the Euro.

First things first…

*BREATH*

I know that’s quite a lot to take in… but here are a few other things that happened:

image

Now I wont type all those occurrences out a) I think it would probably bore you to death… and b) I don’t really want to sit here patronizing you.

Last but not least - these are a few of the fashion idols I have selected from 2011:

image

Lovely aren’t they - it wasn’t until after I’d done it I realised id forgotten Adele and Nicki Minaj. Now I just feel bad.

Anyway… some of you may be wondering how this actually has an effect on fashion. A.K.A. How exactly it dominates whats hot & whats not.

Let me give you a few examples:

Here are a couple of looks I have taken from the runways of SS & FW 2012.

Fancy & Frivolous:

There are a number of trends on this Springs catwalks that suggest that buyers, forecasters & designers want people to have a little fun!

Why? hmm… now lets think - RECESSION?! CONTINUOUS WARS?! A.K.A. Bad times all round.

People often subconsciously look to fashion as a form of escapism to relax their minds from the stress and bores of the big bad world.

Frills upon frills or romanticised lace, over-sized neon animal prints & techno savvy ‘in your face’ prints.

Lets face it - fashion is all about having fun.

If we didn’t have fashion to poke fun at in our lives these days - just what exactly would we use to get our laughs out of?

image

Sports Luxx:

Now we’ve seen sports luxx emerging over the last couple of seasons - but come SS 2012 its going to hit you in the face like a tennis ball served by Venus Williams.

Can anyone guess why?

Give your self a round of applause if you got it right - ITS THE OLYMPICS of course. And its simply because EVERYONE is getting so excited.

PLUS: If your anything like me and have no skills in regards to anything sports related then wearing this trend is a brilliant way to show your appreciation.

image

Heritage:

Since Kate & Wills i.e. Kate Middleton and Prince William got married, it seems that everyone wants to be British and stick to their heritage. (This includes eating scones and cakes with tea in china tea sets - so I’m definitely not complaining).

Basically - believe me when I say that everyone will be wearing the ‘granny chic’ look by this time next year!

image

So really, although she may seem it - Anna Wintour is not the ruler of all things fashion.

It is, in fact - The Zeitgeist.

Highstreet trends : FW 2011

First things first, sorry for being a bad blogger - I haven’t had a chance to blog in a couple of days - so I’m going to make it up to you today with a slight blogging overload.

Basically Ive been researching trends, and there are quite a few micro trends that take my fancy right now. Unfortunately for me I just don’t have the funds to invest in all of them - so ill blog about them instead!

First things first -This is why I have chosen to blog about the following micro trends:

  • Dalmatian print - looked oh so uber glam on the Topshop runways for this current fall. The great thing is its not designer which means no designer prices!! (maybe I will be able to invest in this one after all!)
  • Leopard print - in a total of three words: ITS. A. MUST.
  • The Bambi look -  everyone is wearing Bambi in one way or another - I quite like the printed tops with some tweed and a bit of faux fur.

You may have noticed that these are all animal related micro trends - why? Well because animals are apparently where its at this season.

Yay for animal farm I guess.

So here’s the deal: none of the outfits from below add up to any more than £100… unless you include the indulgence of shoes - if you’d like further info on any of the prices etc. then feel free to give me a little mail. Enjoy.

  image

If you ask me fashion is all about having fun. So with the dalmatian print (above) add a Disney print tank top (in season)to lighten up the uber glam mood. team it with leather look leggings (or trousers), a denim jacket and a bright coloured faux fur stole over the collar - very in vogue I promise. The secret to this look?! Keep it simple and stick to dalmatian print, but that doesn’t mean you cant use lots of it… go crazy and let the animal inside loose.

image

I found that the best place to shop leopard print this season is Warehouse- don’t be put off by the prices, because you are paying for quality here… and leopard print is a micro trend that’s always on the radar.

To get the look right without risking looking a bit like someone off the cast of a chavvy soap opera *cough* Eastenders *cough* then make sure you mix the intensity of the print: by this I mean have some fine lepoard print on your coat, and a larger version or a totally different version of the print on your accessories - just keep it simple by sticking to the same colour.

image

No last but not at all least, we have the Bambi look. This one has been favoured by celebs such as Donatella Versace and our British sweetheart Cheryl Cole.

Rather than joining the flock of sheep however, wear this look with a twist by wearing a printed Bambi t shirt / sweater rather than a Bambi print dress. It looks funkier, and you’ll be rocking a trend rather than simply joining in on one.

Team it with some tweed shorts (and tights - since we are after all nearly in December dears) and a faux fur Gillette so finish off the Bambi vibe. If its a little too plain for your liking then add a little colour with a fabulous shade of hot pink lipstick (make sure its matt - not gloss, and you’ll be right on trend this season) BRAVO.

So there we have it, a few micro trends right from our British high street to keep you looking uber fash.

I know I probably say this in every post - but remember fashion is all about having fun - so dont be too shy to experiment with your look.

Glitsy lips. Fashions latest micro trend.

Before I start this post I would just like to point out that I KNOW  I keep rambling on and on about glitter, metallics, sequin etc. - but the reason is purely because texture (including all of these shiny sparkly things) is in fashion this season BIG TIME.

If like me, you love fashion but cannot afford to by a new wardrobe every time a new trend comes by, then you’ll love this.

It involves my two favourite things (that most girls should like - no matter what style your into)… lipstick and glitter.Capiche? That’s it.

Just take a look at these photos I found on a search across some uber fashionable blogs on tumblr:

image

What a great way to blow a kiss huh? Beats lip balm any day!

image  image

If reds a little to plain Jane for you then opt for a fun girlish colour like pink!

image

This one is definitely my favourite. Colourful. Glittery. Fashionable. Fun.

You like?! I thought you would.

Anyway on to the point… here’s how to achieve the look:

Master the look by practising first, and experiment with different colours: think cerise pink and orange.  You may also want to very lightly layer / dab a clear gloss over the finished look to stop the glitter wearing off during the day and night.

Another alternative would be to mix real glitter with clear lip gloss. (edible glitter would leak dye through the gloss whereas real glitter will simply  mix in) Then paint it over your red lips to create the finished look.

If you’d like to give it a try with edible glitter then you can find a great selection of colours here:

Good luck. And remember - fashion is all about experimenting… so go crazy girls!

Metallic Hair : FW 2011

So we all know that metallics are in fashion right? (You better be nodding your head) - but what we all may not know is how to carry it off as part of our everyday look. *Surprise surprise* in some offices, it is in fact inappropriate to wear shiny silver trousers.

                                   image

ABOVE: MODELS at the JASON WU show last year rocking some ‘golden locks’.So here is a little idea to get you thinking outside the box when it comes to all things gold and silver this season. It began as a micro trend last year - but this winter, its certainly back to make an impact.

How to get the Look:

You can add this trend to all sorts of hair styles, all you literally need to do is to paint it on - no hair dye, just a bit of gel and glitter.

All you need to do is get your hands on some coloured gel - what colour totally depends on the colour you want the glitter in your hair to be, so if you want gold get some gold hair gel, if you want to be daring get some red… I’m sure you understand.

Your then going to need to get some matching glitter that you can mix into the gel and sprinkle on top… so again the colour of the glitter you want totally depends on the your personal colour preference.

You then need to style your hair - shove it up in a top knot, tie it in a plait… the choices are endless.
Mix in some glitter with the gel, and then paint it onto your styled hair wherever you want it.
Sprinkle on some more glitter over the top of the gel to get the finished look.

Although Jason Wu used coloured gel - I personally think it would look just as good, if not better with clear gel… and multicoloured glitter?!
